NPL – Maryland Data Center

With the rise of AI and cryptocurrency, demand for modern data centers is skyrocketing, and Maryland is a key connection point to the largest concentration of data centers in the country at Data Center Alley. These unique facilities require substantial energy resources, complex infrastructure, and innovative construction and engineering solutions. NPL has emerged as an industry leader in the data center space, and in 2023, we were selected to install 16 miles of fiber conduit on behalf of a developer. The NPL team was chosen for their experience in managing difficult terrain, expertise in open-cut methods and horizontal direction drilling (HDD), specialized tooling capabilities, expansive fleet, and proven track record for environmental and community responsibility.

Given the vast environmental and cultural considerations of this project, precise planning and communication were essential. The experienced crew drilled and cabled under the Monocacy River, through ecologically sensitive areas, and around sites of cultural and historic significance. Throughout the entire 16-mile tract, impacted areas were restored to their original condition or left better than they were found. Thanks to NPL’s commitment to safety and quality, the work was completed with zero safety or environmental incidents.
