Project Overview

A global technology leader in renewable power and energy solutions sought to improve network reliability at their Andover, New Jersey facility by installing a 20 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to collect energy from the electrical grid and store it for later use during peak demand.

As a turnkey construction provider and renewable technologies expert, we partnered with the client to provide the civil construction, overhead distribution, and electrical capabilities necessary for bringing the BESS project to life.

Project Scope of Work Included:

Civil

  • Topsoil and Detention Basin Excavation
  • Sediment Berm, DGA, and Finish Rock Installation
  • Access Road and Gates Installation
  • Concrete Foundations for Enclosures, PCS Skids, and Electrical Equipment

Overhead

Installation of:

  • Utility Poles w/Fused Cutouts
  • Metering Cluster
  • Gang-Operated Air Brake Switch

Electrical

Installation of:

  • 800 kVA Transformer
  • 1000 Amp Distribution Switchgear
  • 1200 Amp 35kv Switchgear
  • BESS PCS Skids and Enclosures
  • Site Communication Equipment, Grounding and System Bonding, and Underground Raceways and Cabling

Challenges and Results

Despite challenges with electrical gear lead times and a tight overall deadline, the team planned sequential work around equipment deliveries to keep the project moving forward and on schedule. These adaptations along with other efficiencies ensured the site was operational by September 2022, with the completed system fulfilling the client’s goals of increased network efficiency, stronger peak resilience, and improved energy renewability.
