Electrical Infrastructure and Switchgear Projects

Located in Pennsylvania

  • Capabilities
    • Distributed Power, Renewable & Industrial
    • Electric Infrastructure
    • Natural Gas Infrastructure
  • Completion 2024

Project Overview

The Phase II electrical design project involved relocating a 15kV underground distribution system, enhancing functionality and reliability for our client in southeastern Pennsylvania. The project encompassed overhead distribution, utility civil work, electrical installations, and horizontal directional drilling, showcasing our comprehensive turnkey capabilities.

Key Highlights

The site complexity posed the greatest project challenge, as it was a former U.S. Steel site with substantial logistical difficulties and underground barriers. Excavation was particularly demanding due to remnants of the old steel mill, including extensive underground slag formations.

Project Scope of Work Included:

Electrical

  • Furnish and Installation of four 15KV S&C Low-Profile Pad-Mount Vista Switches
  • Installation of 8 Electrical Manholes
  • Installation of Underground Raceways for New feeders
  • Establish New Underground Ground System for Raceways and New Switchgear Location
  • Installation of 130,000+ Feet of 15KV Cable with Terminations by Our 3M-Certified Cable Termination Group
  • Acceptance Testing of All Equipment to Ensure Standards Compliance

Civil

  • Site Surveying and Layout of Electrical Duct Banks
  • Duct Bank Excavation and Concrete Backfill
  • Grading 15KV Switchgear Location
  • Installation of Switchgear Equipment Pads
  • Backfill and Crush Installation
  • Manhole Installation

Overhead Distribution

  • Demolition of Existing Overhead Feeder Line to Prepare Site for New Installations

Horizontal Drilling

  • HDD Drilling Under Train Tracks to Allow Our Electrical Team to Complete Project

Challenges and Results

This project earned the NECA 2024 Project Excellence Award for Transportation/Infrastructure.

The project highlights our capability to handle challenging environments and complex tasks while maintaining the highest standards for quality, safety, and efficiency. As a former U.S. Steel industrial site, (where we completed mechanical and electrical work in the 1950s), the location presented numerous challenges for all crews involved. By employing horizontal directional drilling (HDD) beneath train tracks to complete electrical installations, the team demonstrated its ability to tackle significant challenges in meeting all milestones and delivering a successful project.
