K43 Fiber Project

Located in Vermont

  • Completion 2021

Project Overview

In 2021, in Vermont, we installed 21 miles of new ADSS fiber-optic cable along an energized 115kV transmission line stretching from Williston to New Haven. The installation took place within the energized space, where our highly experienced linemen worked safely and efficiently to install the new cable and connect fiber control services between substations.

Key Highlights

Most of the installation occurred in off-road farmland and was scheduled during Vermont’s notorious winter and spring mud season to minimize the impact on land and town dirt roads. Access was challenging, with crews using all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) or hiking on foot to reach many portions of the line. Our goal was to install the fiber with the least possible impact to property.

Challenges and Results

Safety was a top priority throughout the project as we worked through farmland, mud season, snow, and even a frozen swamp. With limited right of way access for our bucket trucks, our linemen climbed 75% of the structures, navigating tough terrain on foot or via ATVs to meet project deadlines for the ADSS install between two substations.  Despite these obstacles, our crews completed the work while the ground remained frozen. The new fiber now provides our client’s network in the region. We secured the project not only through a competitive bid but also because the client had prior experience with our project team. Familiarity with our work gave them confidence in our ability complete the job safely and on schedule.
