115kV Transmission Line Rebuild

Located in Denver

  • Capability
    • Electric Infrastructure
  • Completion 2025

Project Overview

The project involves the reconstruction of a 115kV transmission line for a local electric cooperative serving rural and suburban areas around the Denver metro region. Stretching approximately 3.5 miles from the Waterton substation to the Roxboro substation, the work included replacing existing airframe structures with single-pole structures and upgrading the conductor. This effort is part of a broader infrastructure upgrade aimed at enhancing the reliability and capacity of the power grid in the region.

Key Highlights

Our team ensured safety remained a top priority throughout this project by having daily safety briefings, weekly tailgate talks, and empowering the crew with stop-work authority.

Project Scope of Work Included:

  • Core Electric
  • Rebuilding 3.5 Miles of 115kV Transmission Line
  • Replacing Airframe Structures With Single-Pole Structures
  • Upgrading Conductor Size From 477 to 1272
  • Transmission Line Construction Techniques: Installation of Heavy Steel Structures, Sizable Foundations, and Large Wire Pulls

Challenges and Results

During the demolition phase, our team encountered an unexpected issue – a section of fiber that runs underground had been left with insufficient length for proper splicing. To resolve this, we located and added extra fiber, as well as moved the splice box slightly. In addition, we remained committed to preserving the integrity of the area despite having no significant environmental oversight due to the project’s location on private property. Nevertheless, we implemented standard stormwater controls to minimize environmental impact. Overall, the project progressed smoothly with very few major challenges, allowing us to complete the entire scope—including full demolition and line construction—within a two-month timeframe.
