Advancing Clean Energy Infrastructure for Environmental Impact

Rising energy demand requires reliable, sustainable systems. Centuri meets this need by building energy infrastructure across electric, gas, and distributed power markets while preparing customers for a lower carbon future. Modernized grids, upgraded pipelines, renewable interconnections, and distributed power assets are reshaping the energy landscape. Centuri helps customers navigate this transformation by delivering operational reliability, long-term community benefits, and measurable emissions reductions in line with their stated goals and targets.

Operational Excellence with Environmental Responsibility

Centuri helps customers prepare infrastructure for a lower-carbon future while embedding environmental stewardship across every aspect of its business, from protecting people and natural resources to exceeding regulatory requirements. On the job environmental management starts before construction begins and continues through operations. This includes implementation of environmental considerations in our planning before a job commences, with a focus on environmental and biodiversity protection and mitigation measures. This approach ensures Centuri delivers reliable, sustainable utility infrastructure that meets both customer and community expectations.

Reducing Scope 1 & Scope 2 Emissions

Centuri tracks both Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions to identify effective ways to decarbonize its operations, including fuel use in vehicles and electricity consumption in facilities. We aim to reduce combined Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 25% by 2030 from a 2019 baseline, with progress measured through fleet and facility intensity metrics. Our fleet strategy lightens our environmental footprint through better asset utilization, reduced fuel consumption, and responsible lifecycle planning.

Enabling Clean Energy & Grid Modernization

Through construction upgrades, replacements, retrofits, and commissioning work, Centuri strengthens networks without compromising reliability, enabling safe connections for new resources and scalable service for communities. Our natural gas projects improve system efficiency and safety through pipeline replacements, station upgrades, integrity work, and renewable natural gas integrations, reducing risks and supporting lower carbon solutions. For electric infrastructure, Centuri helps utilities expand the grid to accommodate modern generation, storage, and advanced load requirements, enhancing reliability and reducing outage risk. We also implement and interconnect renewable energy systems, including hybrid solutions, distributed power, and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), making clean energy generation operational and economical for customers. Centuri’s approach unites reliability and sustainability, delivering modernized, resilient, and cleaner infrastructure that communities can depend on.

Measuring What Matters

Environmental KPIs

We believe that measurement turns sustainability intent into operational accountability. Centuri tracks environmental performance through 15 defined Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). These include emissions-related metrics such as C02 emissions, direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions, as well as operational drivers tied to fleet and facilities.

Emissions intensity tracking

We report emissions intensity trends over time to show progress and identify where additional action is needed. Our latest data shows fleet emissions intensity reported as tCO₂ per mile, with fewer emissions generated for every mile driven. Over the same comparison period, facility electricity intensity, measured in kW per square foot, improved as we used less energy per unit of space. These KPIs support our data-driven infrastructure decarbonization decisions.

Strategic Fleet Management

Effectively managing our fleet is a major driver in our ability to sustainably scale and grow. With over 13,000 pieces of equipment, Centuri’s fleet management strategy is critical to delivering operational excellence, serving customers effectively, and creating long-term shareholder value.

Connecting progress to UN SDGs

In 2024, Centuri aligned its work with six UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) where it sees the greatest opportunity for impact. Our work to expand clean energy infrastructure supports resilient networks and advances emissions management, aligning with the UN SDGs focused on energy, infrastructure, and climate action.

FAQs

What are Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions?

Scope 1 emissions are direct greenhouse gas emissions that come from owned or controlled vehicles, such as fuel used in fleet vehicles and some equipment. Scope 2 emissions are indirect GHG emissions that occur from purchased and used electricity, steam, heat, or cooling.

What are Centuri’s emissions reduction goals?

Centuri has set a goal to reduce combined Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2030, using 2019 as its baseline year. We track progress using intensity metrics such as t/CO 2 per mile for fleet activity and KW per Sq. Ft. for facility electricity use.

What does environmental protection mean for Centuri?

Environmental protection at Centuri goes beyond compliance with environmental regulations. It includes modernizing our equipment fleet to minimize emissions and fuel consumption, mitigating environmental impacts from our construction work, and implementing clean energy infrastructure for our partners.
